Geographical Background
Davao Region, designated as Region XI, consists of five (5) provinces and six (6) cities, namely: Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur, and the newly created Davao Occidental, and the Cities of Davao, Panabo, Tagum, Digos, Mati, and Island Garden City of Samal. It is located in the southeastern portion of the island of Mindanao surrounding the Davao Gulf. It is bounded on the north by the provinces of Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Sur, and Bukidnon, on the east by the Philippine Sea, and on the west by the Central Mindanao provinces.
Agricultural Production
Agricultural production in Davao Region dropped by 8.32 percent in 2013. The decline was attributed to the output decreases in crops and livestock subsectors. The crops subsector, which comprised 66.56% percent of the region's agricultural output, recorded a 12.58 percent decrease. Production in the livestock subsector slightly went down by 0.73 percent. On the other hand, the poultry and fisheries subsectors had output increases of 3.71 percent and 3.32 percent, respectively.

Palay production in 2013 slid to 421,692 metric tons, lower by 6.02 percent from the 2012 level. Area harvested at 103,294 hectares trimmed down slightly by 0.67 percent. Palay yield, at 4.08 metric tons per hectare, dropped by 5.38%. Corn production at 227,013 metric tons in 2013 was up by 14.29 percent from the previous year's level. Area harvested expanded to 159,378 hectares by 9.11 percent. Corn yield, at 1.42 metric tons per hectare, improved by 4.75 percent.

The five major commodities produced in Davao Region, namely, banana, hog, chicken, palay, and coconut contributed 71.23 percent to the region's total agricultural output in 2013. The region continued to be the country's number one producer of banana and coconut. It ranked sixth in hog production and seventh in chicken production.
